Description

Permeable pavement at a parking lot at the Beacon Institute

The parking lot at this public educational center minimizes stormwater runoff from parking areas by encouraging infiltration. Concrete paving stones are set in the ground to provide structure in order to sufficiently support the weight of cars parked in the area, but still allow water to infiltrate into the ground in the spaces between. The landscape architect defined the driving and parking areas by using three different materials within the infiltration gaps; concrete insets, grass-planted earth, and stone fines.  The reused brick walkways around the building also allow infiltration.
